2nd version of a young girl (done in a cartoon style).

Filed under: Alla Prima Paintings — Administrator @ 8:57 pm

AAhh..so here is my second rendition of a young girl which a friend wanted for a possible toy design. This one is definitely better than the earlier version (which I posted about two postings ago, see the first Sept.18th posting for the comparison). I eliminated most of the shading done in the first drawing & focused instead on the line variation of the contour, outline & or edges. By simplifying the character, I think the overall design was strengthened a bit more…

Graffiti Styled Letters for Blaise Rosario’s Film Business.

Filed under: Alla Prima Paintings — Administrator @ 3:02 pm

This ink drawing is for a friend who wanted a couple designs (either using his name with a stylized font, or a character) for his new film company, “Blaise Films.” So I sketched it out in a 1980’s New york Graffiti-like version with a verbal play on his name which sounds like “Blaze,” but is really spelled “Blaise.” And instead of “Blaise Films,” I switched the wording around and it now reads “Films Ablaze (ooohh… films on fire ),” which sounds a whole lot more interesting! I kept the outline fairly simple though as both he & I will do different versions of it with layers & color in the Photoshop program. Some more versions of this will be posted soon & a few character designs as well…

My latest Oil Painting based on Latin Music (still in progress).

Here is a pic of my latest painting for my series of artwork based on Latin Music…With this latest addition I decided to not use a photo as a reference (as I did for the first four previous works) & instead depended on my imagination. One reason for this was that I felt that the pieces needed to have a more improvisatory nature or “look” to them, especially since Latin music contains a certain amount of improvisation, and secondly, I was just getting bored at depending on photos that I had taken at local latin nightclubs & jazz spots. The earlier paintings were fine, but I want these artworks to really represent visually the sound of the salsa & latin jazz descargas (Descarga-latin for a “Discharge,” and is a Latin musician’s slang term for a jam session. Descargas occupy a position midway between salsa and Latin-jazz, since they tend to preserve the Cuban structures yet contain far more jazz soloing than does salsa). So most of the painting so far (with the exception of the figure playing the conga taken from a drawing I did earlier) has been made spontaneously as I’ve progressed with the painting. It still needs a bit more embellishment here & there though…

A quick (stylized cartoon style) sketch of a young girl for a friend.

Here is a drawing I did of a little girl which was obviously done in a very stylized cartoon like manner… I was trying to give her a little attitude with her body language (arms crossed, her laid back stance, one eye open more than the other), will probably do a couple more to loosen up and to see where I can go with this character that my friend wanted.

Alla prima painting of a green plantain, a pepper and three tomatoes.

Filed under: Alla Prima Paintings — Administrator @ 4:31 am

This painting took me about 5 and half hours to finish…a bit longer to complete than the previous painting (the plum & banana painting took 3 and a half hours). But I guess if I’m going to add more elements into a composition I should really expect it to take a bit longer…the color scheme here is between two sets of complimentaries, green & red, and orange and blue (well a very light tint of blue on the table that is).

Alla prima painting of a plum with two bananas.

This painting was started in the late hours one night into the wee early hours of the next morning about two weeks ago. Don’t ask me why I was painting at that time, its just that is when I happened to get inspired enough to attempt to complete a still life painting in one shot…(started it around 11pm and finished it around 2:30 am the next morning) …so it took me about 3 and a half hours to finish… the color scheme revolves around the complimentary colors yellow & purple…

Hello world!

Filed under: Alla Prima Paintings — Administrator @ 6:13 pm
Hello World ( that’s just weird to write.), I’m Alfredo Gomez Jr., a Fine Artist based out of Northeastern New Jersey ( just 20 minutes away from the Big Apple ) who is trying to eventually make a living solely through my Artwork… (Ahhh..don’t all Artists want that?!).   Well I’ve taking a cue from my friendly neighborhood Animator (Ricardo Vicens) & decided to post a Blog about my Artwork.  Specifically my alla prima Paintings & Drawings.  The alla prima paintings lately take me about 5 hours to complete  ( alla prima -” a painting completed in one session or sitting, or all at once.”).  I’ll be even throwing in my commissioned works through their different levels of development.  This will first of all keep me on schedule with the commissions.  Another benefit is that hopefully these works in progress will show prospective patrons and/or other artists my working process. In any case I hope you will find this Bi-Weekly Alla Prima Painting & Drawing Blog informative but more importantly entertaining… -Alfredo Gomez Jr.
